Fic Spotlight

Title: Atonement
Author: terrayn
Length: 6,857
Rating: MT
Warnings:  Dark, Angst, Mild Violence, Psychological Trauma, Drama
Summary: He counts meals because they don't let him have calendars in Azkaban. | Draco isn't interested in being redeemed.

Editor’s Thoughts:  Hello everyone! *waves* I know this fic spotlight is a little late, but I wanted to make sure I got one up for the month, so here it is!  I've been reading a lot of drabbles and short fiction lately (looking for nominations for the dramione_awards ) and as I was flipping through all my favorites, I can across this drabble collection. It is, by far, my favorite of any other drabble/ficlet collection and I was incredibly moved as I went back through and re-read these amazing drabbles/ficlets.

This brilliant collection of Dramione ficlets is poignant, captivating, and utterly spell-binding. The unique premises and perspectives give the reader a truly personal and emotional reading experience. The ficlets, though unrelated, all capture the true depth, nature, and reality of Draco Malfoy's journey towards redemption. This collection is profoundly moving, beautifully written, and a true treasure.

Most of these stories are too long to nominate for the Dramione awards, but nonetheless, I absolutely adore terrayn 's work in this collection and  I encourage you all to read them!!  They are award-winning in my book!

Title: The Revenant
Author: atalanta84
Length: 67,866
Rating: NC17
Warnings: Coarse Language, Lemons, Minor Character Death, Suicide, Torture, Unresolved Sexual Tension, Violence
Summary: Sometimes fate brings us far from home, and sometimes it brings us back again. When a friend’s mysterious death causes Draco Malfoy to return to Britain, he is finally forced to face his past, and the love he left behind. A story about second chances.

Editor’s Thoughts: I have to say I was very honoured to help as a beta reader on this story, and for someone who had to wait until the next chapter was finished, I can honestly say, I have rarely waited for an update with such anticipation and awe. The story was so craftily built, with so many layers of awesomeness, that I have went from one suspect to the next, I have laughed out loud at some of the comebacks, (because first-rate humour is the trademark of the author), and I have cried (literally) at some of the revelations. I have enjoyed the mystery aspect of the story, and how some of Muggle tecnological aspects where incorporated into the Ministry crime-solving machine. Ron and Harry were especially lovable in this one, and I have thoroughly basked in the presence of some of our known sneaky Slytherins – namely, Mr and Mrs Malfoy, who were simply refreshing and amazing. Every scene with Lucius Malfoy in it brought a grin to my face, if you can imagine that.

But of course, the best part of each Dramione is how the relationship between our two beloved characters evolves. And that is a mystery in itself - a mystery explored through the engenious use of flashbacks in just the right places. Both Draco and Hermione are such complex characters in this one, I would do you a disservice by listing all the reasons I fell in love with this couple with new fervour.

Since I do not wish to spoil the reading pleasure to any of you who have not yet been able to read The Revenant, I can only encourage you to find the time for it. It made me wish fanfiction could be published in the form of luxurious, limited edition, leather-bound books... and the cover would be the banner made by the talented draconis23. Yes, all my fantasy worlds are this detailed. Enjoy!

Title: Macbeth
Author: cyropi
Length: 115,185
Rating: T
Warnings: Nil
Summary: 'Come what come may, time and the hour runs through the roughest day.' Voldemort's second rise to power and a part in Shakespeare's infamous Scottish Play make this fitting for Hermione – especially when she discovers a darker side to Draco Malfoy. PreHBP.

Editor’s Thoughts: My love for Dramione takes me all the way back to 2004, when most of the favourite fics then had Draco and Hermione falling in love at masquerade balls or as Head Boy and Girl. Fairly innocent, fairly lighthearted.

But Macbeth was/is different. Staging a Muggle play in Hogwarts might sound dubious, but the author brilliantly layers the setting with other great storytelling techniques. Characterisation is given a new definition when a less glossy Draco appears on stage, real life terror and confusion channelled into his portrayal of Macbeth. Hermione, known for her confidence which led to her clinching the role of Lady Macbeth, starts to falter when she uncovers the truth of what Draco is afraid of. Harry, upright and suspicious, takes on the role of Macduff to investigate. As it is, Shakespeare's Macbeth had been my literature text that year, and I was blown away by the stunningly accurate parallels that the author had drawn between the play and the characters of Harry Potter.

This classic fic is probably well-known to most Dramione readers, but I encourage new readers to be transported back to a time when dark fics were not altogether common, and for those who've read and enjoyed this fic, to revisit this special piece.

Fic Spotlight

Title: No Name Woman
Author: bk11
Length: 20,303
Rating: NC-17
Warnings: profanity, sexual content
Summary: It’s a strange new world in which Hermione runs from the law and Draco is the one to bring her back.

Editor’s Thoughts: Wrenching, evocative, philosophical -- each word in this too-brief, too-lovely story batters against you, at times with the force of hailstones and at others, with the feather-touch of a drizzle. Told mostly from Draco's perspective, it's a time-disjointed tale of how Hermione Granger became one of Wizarding England's most wanted fugitives. The beginning of this story is also the beginning of its end.

Draco is an Auror in an AU-HBP-compliant world where extremists run a militant British government and fugitives are hunted down by hit squads. He finds Hermione in Casablanca and brings her back to be locked up in St. Mungo's until her trial. As flawed as Hermione is, and we're privy to much introspection on her part, we get to live and experience the turbulent times in tension-fraught flashes from Draco's eyes. He is/was a racist, he believes/doesn't believe in genocide, and he's no hero, barely a decent man, full of self-justifications, but just vulnerable enough to let another person in, and when he does and she does, it all comes together in a kaleidoscope of graphic, unusual prose that'll leave you with a thoughtful feeling for hours afterwards.

No Name Woman is not merely romantic; it's human.

Title: The Universe is a Great and Beautiful Thing | FFN
Author: basicaquatics
Length: 17,938
Rating: R
Warnings: character death
Summary: “One of the greatest surprises in life is finding out how you’re going to die, and the fact that nobody can ever spoil it for you.”

Editor’s Thoughts: Some stories are universal; they transcend pairing, genre and fandom. This is such a story. Draco is dying, and he wishes he were dead. Fully paralyzed, he spends day in and day out locked in his own body, drowning in thoughts and fears and regrets for which he has no outlet. What a depressing premise, you might be thinking. But it's not. Attica drags you into Draco's skull so that you live every excruciating second with him and when he finally lets you go, you aren't sad. You're hopeful, hurting, wistful, glad. I don't have the words to describe the feeling, but I was moved. Utterly.

You owe it to yourself to read this fic. Some people find love and self-love early, some late, and some just in the nick of time.
